A Pembrokeshire pickleball player is celebrating an unforgettable sporting triumph after being crowned Welsh Doubles Pickleball Champion following a dramatic and nail‑biting championship campaign.
Carl, a member of the local pickleball community and founder of CLWB Pickleball Trefin, secured the national title alongside his doubles partner after a tournament packed with twists, momentum shifts and high‑pressure moments. From the opening rounds through to the final match, the championship delivered excitement in abundance, with games being both won and lost as the competition progressed.
The pair showed remarkable resilience throughout the tournament, regrouping after setbacks and responding with composure and confidence when it mattered most. Each round tested their ability to adapt, communicate and stay focused, qualities that would prove crucial by the time they reached the final.
The championship match itself was an electrifying showcase of modern pickleball at its best. Played at a fast pace and watched by an engaged and vocal crowd, the final went right down to the wire. With points finely balanced and tension building, Carl and his partner drew on clever team tactics, sharp decision‑making and moments of exceptional play to edge ahead and ultimately claim the Welsh Doubles title.
Reflecting on the achievement, Carl described the experience as “challenging, rewarding and unforgettable,” praising both his playing partner and the supportive pickleball community that helped shape his journey.
“I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved,” he said. “The tournament tested us in every round, but we stayed positive, backed each other and trusted our game when the pressure was highest.”
Away from competition, Carl has played a key role in growing the sport locally. In 2024, he founded CLWB Pickleball Trefin, a community‑led club dedicated to encouraging participation from people of all ages and abilities. The club has quickly become a welcoming hub for players new to the sport as well as those keen to develop their skills in a supportive environment.
Pickleball — a dynamic sport combining elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis — is one of the fastest‑growing sports in the UK, and its popularity is rising rapidly across Pembrokeshire. Carl’s Welsh championship success is not only a personal milestone but also a powerful example of the opportunities available to local players.
Pembrokeshire Leisure has expressed its delight in facilitating pickleball sessions and supporting the sport’s expansion across the county. Carl’s success highlights the impact of accessible facilities, strong community leadership and a shared passion for getting people active.
With a Welsh title now to his name, Carl hopes his journey will inspire others across Pembrokeshire to pick up a paddle, give pickleball a try and discover just how exciting — and rewarding — the sport can be.
