Exercise Buddies

Exercise Buddies is a project in receipt of grant funding from the Health and Social Care Regional Integration Fund. The project aims to increase the amount of physical activity that people with a learning disability and their parents/carers engage in and to have a positive impact on the physical health and mental wellbeing

Many people with disabilities do not engage in physical activities so this project aims to support them to engage in a range of activities that will improve their physical and mental health. It will also support parents and carers to engage in more activities which will again improve their physical and mental health. The project will ensure that the new activities are built into sustainable projects within people's own communities.

Our objective is to initiate and support the development of physical activity available to the target group in the county and to scope out the opportunities or development of both indoor and outdoor physical activity groups across the county.

By the end of the project, we will have developed more opportunities for adults with a learning disability to be active and to meet with their peers in safe and specifically tailored sessions. A network of venues will be developed to support people to access ‘ordinary’ exercise opportunities within people's own communities and we will provide opportunities for training and support to enhance and support people with a variety of needs in the future.
