Staying safe at the beach

We all play a role in staying safe at the beach and in keeping our beaches clean. The next time you visit even collecting 5 pieces of rubbish can help make our beaches cleaner and safer places to visit.

Every year there are accidents, drownings and near misses on our beaches and around open water. Pembrokeshire Leisure in partnership with the RNLI and Swim Wales support the delivery of the 4 key water safety messages and Float to Live campaign:

  1. Stop and think – is it safe? What dangers are there? Is there a lifeguard?
  2. Stay together – stay close to family or friends. If going alone tell someone where you are going and when you will be back. carry a phone to call for help.
  3. Float – Float to Live. Stretch out in a star shape on your back and float until you feel calm. Once calm wave your arms, shout for attention and swim to safety if you can.
  4. Call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard. Ask for the fire and rescue service if inland. After you call for help see if there is something you can throw to help someone float. Do not enter the water yourself.
